Monsoon Forecast for Aug 14, 2018: Heavy Monsoon rains in Uttarakhand, Kerala, Bihar, Jharkhand

The western arm of the axis of Monsoon trough continues to pass through the foothills from Amritsar, Patiala, Hardoi, while the eastern arm is dipping south from Varanasi, Daltonganj, Bhubaneswar and then southeastwards towards east central Bay of Bengal.

As a result, Monsoon remained vigorous over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, active Monsoon conditions were witnessed over Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Bihar, parts of East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Major rainfall contribution came from Hamirpur which saw 248 mm of rains followed by Haridwar at 189 mm and Shimla that recorded 173 mm of rain.

However, there was no change in the countrywide cumulative rainfall deficiency that stood at 11% as on August 12. At present, South India is the only pocket that is rain surplus by 1%, whereas East & Northeast India is the highest rain deficient pocket by 27%, followed by Northwest India at 7% and East and Northeast India at 6%.

During the next 24 hours, vigorous Monsoon conditions will prevail over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, foothills as well as eastern pockets of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and parts of Assam. All these areas could see heavy to very heavy rains along with isolated extremely heavy spells, leading to flash floods and landslides.

Monsoon will remain active over Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, remaining Uttar Pradesh and Punjab that might see moderate to heavy rains with isolated very heavy spells.
 
Meanwhile, normal Monsoon rains are likely over Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, East Madhya Pradesh and Konkan & Goa, while it will remain subdued over the rest of the country.
