Monsoon Forecast for Aug 12, 2017: Heavy Monsoon Rains in Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, flooding likely

Southwest Monsoon remained vigorous over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and North Odisha. In fact, heavy rains have triggered fresh spell of floods in these areas. Active Monsoon conditions were seen over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Lakshadweep region. Normal Monsoon conditions persisted over Gangetic West Bengal, remaining parts of northeastern states, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka.

Major rain contribution came from Cherrapunji that recorded 296 mm of rain, followed by Cooch Behar at 247 mm and Pasighat at 228 mm.

As on August 10, the cumulative countrywide rainfall continues to observe a rain deficit of 3%. As far as the regional distribution is concerned, Northwest India is rain surplus by 10%, whereas, Central, South, East and Northeast India are rain deficient by 3%, 16% and 5%, respectively.

At present, on arm of the axis of Monsoon is passing through Amritsar, Karnal, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Muzaffarpur, Goalpara and further towards Eastern Himalayas.

During the next 24 hours, Monsoon will remain vigorous over Assam, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, North Bihar and foothills of Uttar Pradesh, giving heavy to extremely heavy rains over these areas. These showers are likely to trigger floods over many parts of East and Northeast India.

Live status of Lightning and thunder

Active Monsoon conditions are expected over Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and remaining parts of Bihar that would see light to moderate rains with few heavy spells. Meanwhile Normal Monsoon conditions are likely over Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Interior Tamil Nadu, Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka, and Uttarakhand.
