The weather system that had developed in Southwest Bay of Bengal gave torrential rain over Tamil Nadu, while it lashed Chennai that saw highest rainfall in last 10 years. Named by Maldives, Cyclone Roanu gained enough strength thereafter, giving some unprecedented heavy rains over Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
Now the cyclone has moved further skirting West Bengal coast and is presently lying in north Bay off South Bangladesh coast, 200 km west southwest of Chittagong. The system is moving at a fast pace and is likely to make landfall over Bangladesh coast by Saturday afternoon. Thereafter the system is likely to weaken significantly.
Meanwhile, the system will continue giving rain with reduced intensity over coastal parts Odisha and West Bengal. However, intensity of rains will increase significantly over northeastern states and heavy to very heavy showers along with squally winds are likely over Lower Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during next 24 hours.
