Cyclone Ockhi update: Very Severe Cyclone Ockhi over Lakshadweep to intensify further

Cyclone Ochki had intensified into a very severe cyclone on evening of December 1. In the last 21 hours from 08:30 am to 05:30 am today Puducherry 109 mm, Cuddalore 108 mm, Minicoy 136 mm, Karaikal 118 mm, Nagapattinam 74 mm Thiruvananthapuram 47 mm, Madurai 26 mm, Kozhikode 22 mm, Kanyakumari 12 mm, Amini Devi 8 mm, Kochi 0.6 mm, Chennai 0.4 mm of rain.

Presently the cyclonic storm is over Lakshwadeep area. The wind speed near the eye of the storm is in order of 120kmph to 130kmph. In wake of this, Lakshadweep Islands remains on high alert it will give and Ochki will continue to give heavy to extremely heavy rains over Lakshwadeep during the next 24 hours. It is anticipated that it will lead to extensive damage to property. The low lying areas can get inundated due to the storm surge.

Now the rain intensity has reduced over Tamil Nadu and Kerala but as per weathermen light to moderate rains will continue over Kerala and the southern tip of Tamil Nadu for another 24 hours. The system is travelling in a favorable environment, as the sea surface temperatures are very warm in order of 30°C to 31°C.

Therefore it is expected to intensify further during the next 24 hours. It is likely to maintain its intensity as a very severe cyclonic storm till the evening of December 3. Thereafter it will start recurving in north-northeast direction and will also start weakening gradually.

During its movement it will start giving light rains in coastal Maharashtra including Mumbai around the night of December 4 and by December 5, the rain intensity may increase marginally over that area. It is also expected to reach Gujarat around December 6 as a Depression therefore many parts of Gujarat will experience light to moderate rains and strong winds.
