Cyclone Gaja has intensified into severe cyclonic storm but for a very short duration. The coast is not very far, and the sea surface temperatures are also low as well as vertical wind shear is high. All these factors would lead to weakening of the system.
Gaja is likely to make a landfall over South Coast of Tamil Nadu near Nagapattinam by tonight as a cyclonic storm only.
Right after hitting the coast, it would weaken into a deep depression and move over Interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining South Kerala by November 16.
Gaja is likely to give heavy to extremely heavy rains over south coastal Tamil Nadu. However, heavy rains would spare Chennai and the city might see light to moderate rains only. Rest of Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh would see light to moderate rains with one or two heavy spells.
