Mumbai Weather Update: High Tide Warning and Orange Alert Issued, Heavy Rain Continues
The monsoon is in full swing in Mumbai. An orange alert has been issued for very heavy rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding districts during the last week of July. Continuous downpours and rising sea waves have significantly disrupted travel and daily life in the city.
Heavy Rains Continue
Mumbai has been recording more than 100 mm of rainfall daily for the past two days. From Monday to Wednesday, nearly 300 mm of rain has been registered. Waterlogging has been reported in many areas, slowing down traffic on the roads. The Andheri subway had to be closed, while people in areas like Dadar, Kurla, and Sion had to wade through water. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next few days, with intense showers likely to persist until Wednesday. As a result, local train services may also be affected in some parts of the city.
Sea Waves on the Rise – High Tide Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have issued a *high tide warning* from July 24 to 27. Entry to coastal areas like Juhu Beach, Marine Drive, and other seafront locations has been restricted. Authorities have clearly advised the public to stay away from the coastline, especially during rainy periods. During high tide, sea waves could rise up to 4.5 meters (about 15 feet), posing a risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
What Does the Orange Alert Mean?
An orange alert for Mumbai and Thane indicates potentially dangerous weather conditions. This warning urges the administration to remain prepared and the public to stay alert. A *red alert* has been issued for Raigad district, where the situation could turn even more severe.
Impact on Schools, Offices, and Travel
Due to heavy rains, several schools have been shut, and private and IT companies have advised employees to work from home. BMC has stated that if the situation worsens, metro and local train services may also be suspended.
What Has the Administration Done?
- BMC has activated a control room that is operating 24x7.
- Pumping stations in low-lying areas have been switched on.
- Citizens are being sent real-time alerts via social media and SMS.
Advisory for Citizens
- Avoid unnecessary travel
- Stay away from the seashore
- Avoid waterlogged areas
- Follow official updates from authorities
Currently, the monsoon continues to wreak havoc in Mumbai. The next 3–4 days may remain challenging, but with alertness and cooperation, the situation can be managed effectively.
