The hills of the Western Himalayas usually experience their first spell of snowfall towards the end of October or early November. However, in 2025, winter made an early entry as the upper reaches of Gulmarg recorded the season’s first snowfall on October 2 and 3. Since then, intermittent rain and snow activities have continued over the region.
On October 6, many parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand witnessed fresh widespread snowfall and rain. This occurred due to the combined effect of a Western Disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining areas and a cyclonic circulation over Haryana. Additionally, moist winds from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal enhanced the weather activity over the Western Himalayas and triggered rain and thunderstorms over northern plains.
The popular skiing destination of Gulmarg is now beautifully draped in white, marking the official start of the winter charm. Other scenic locations such as Zojila Pass, Sonmarg, and Gurez Valley have also received good amounts of snow. In Himachal Pradesh, Rohtang Pass and the Dhauladhar ranges recorded fresh snowfall on Monday, October 6. However, Shimla, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Lahaul-Spiti are still awaiting their first snow of the season.
This early snowfall has lifted the spirits of locals and tourism stakeholders. Many expect an early start to the tourist season, which could significantly boost local income across popular hill destinations.
According to Skymet Weather, no significant snowfall is expected over the Western Himalayas after October 9, as the Western Disturbance is moving away. Moreover, no fresh system is likely to approach for at least the next one week. Therefore, the weather over the hills will remain dry, sunny, and clear in the coming days.
Typically, Western Disturbances start approaching the Himalayas by the third week of October, marking the beginning of more frequent rain and snow events. Until then, the region is expected to enjoy pleasant and tranquil post-snowfall weather.
