As Ganesh Chaturthi rang in, the city of Mumbai began to witness rains as is customary every year. Mumbai rains had remained absent with just very light rains in between for a long time.
However, rainfall activity has been persistent since yesterday with rains increasing after the night. In the last 21 hours from 5.30 am yesterday, Santa Cruz in Mumbai has recorded 106 mm of rainfall.
So much so that after these three digit rains, streets have been inundated in many areas of the city wherein parked vehicles were also seen partially submerged.
These rains have come in after a sort of a dry spell for the city. Rains did continue at 6 in the morning as well. Skymet had already predicted an increase in rain activities for September 3 over the city.
At present, the Axis of Monsoon Trough was active over coastal Karnataka and parts of Kerala. Now, the system has moved northwards. A Cyclonic Circulation is still persisting over South Gujarat region. A Low-Pressure Area which is over Odisha and adjoining areas is also a pull effect over West Coast leading to increased rain activities over entire Konkan and Goa as well Mumbai and suburbs.
Thus, we expect a few on and off moderate spells to continue with isolated heavy spells over some pockets of Mumbai and suburbs. These rains might lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions. These on and off rains are expected to continue at least for the next 48 hours.
These rains might bring in a relief as the city is receiving rains after a prolonged spell of dry and sultry weather. Now, the temperatures are set to fall down and weather will remain pleasant.
