The feast day of St. Valentine is not just about flowers and romance but also about the life of a Catholic saint. Valentine's Day also known as Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated across the world on the 14th of February. This day was observed as a liturgical (a form of public worship or ritual) celebration of an early Christian saint named Valentinus.
Saint Valentine was a temple priest under Emperor Claudius II who believed that unmarried men were better soldiers than the married ones and thus, forbade marriage for younger soldiers. According to the biographical account of the Saint, he defied Claudius and was imprisoned in Roman times for illegally performing weddings for Christians or soldiers who were forbidden to marry. Legends state that before his execution, he had written a letter to the jailer’s daughter named Asterius and signed it off as ‘Your Valentine.’ Today, the religious significance of this day has been kind of overshadowed as celebrations have spread beyond the Christian culture. This secular festival has kind of gained immense importance on the commercial calendar for restaurateurs and retailers.
