Got drenched an hour back and still struggling to get dry? Why not drop wearing those heavy fabrics in the rainy season that take forever to dry. ‘The lighter, the better’, is fashion theme this monsoon! Quit those denims and opt for lighter, falling fabrics like the chiffons, georgettes, crepe and the evergreen cottons.
“It is important to choose the right fabric for a particular weather to be able to enjoy the weather fully and be completely comfortable. I always advise my clients to wear georgettes and chiffons to suit the monsoon season”, says an upcoming Delhi based fashion designer, KunalMehra. “While the humidity is also on the rise, a lot of those summer-friendly fabrics need to be kept aside. Lighter, yet stronger, fabrics are what one needs to opt for”, adds Kunal.
“I love linens but I keep my linen shirts and linen pajamas aside during the monsoon season because they tend to get terribly wet and crushed very easily in the rains. I hate it when the starch washes off, so I avoid wearing those stiff cotton dupattas too. Polyster cotton is a great substitute instead”, talks a fashion designing student from NIFT, Delhi.
It is therefore important to go for fabrics that are lightweight. This will help the fabric dry faster if at all it gets wet. Fabrics like mulmul and lightweight silk are not just right but they also add to the fashion statement. Strictly avoid fabrics which absorb water as they will take longer to dry. One could also opt for fabric like Gabardine and a few other Silicone washed fabrics as they are also stain proof to quite an extent and they will bounce off water.
Transparent plastic-like material in bright neon colours, styled for outwear purposes or for protective raincoat ensembles are a favorite in the international market and have now picked up in the Indian fashion industry as well.
“Transparent net like materials and tops in bright orange and florescent colors are in high demand and sell like hotcakes. Young college girls prefer it the most these days” tells a shopkeeper at the Greater Kailash market.
Women who love to wear ethnic outfits can now play around with shrugs and scarves in huge floral prints. Lastly, least accessories, color and funky flip flops and designer umbrellas emerge as the favorite fashion symbol this monsoon.
