Interesting ways to teach your kids about weather

The ever-changing weather in India impacts lives at many different levels. On a daily basis it can affect choices we make. For instance, whether to walk or take the car, what clothes to wear, and whether outdoor events and pursuits are likely to get glorious sunshine or be rained off.

A heat wave during the summer can boost sales for companies selling drinks and ice-cream whilst a mild winter can have a disastrous impact on the ski industry. Concerns about the weather can also impact lifestyle, careers and emigration as many vote with their feet and head off to sunnier climes. Therefore, it becomes important for us to teach the future generations about the weather in India and the globe so they can become conscious about maintaining the eco balance and hopefully become weather wise.

Weather Education

The knowledge imparted to kids in schools and colleges about weather is of a very basic nature. Kids are often taught about weather and maps of countries in a very boring manner. Yes, it is true that new technologies are being introduced in schools these days for children to enjoy the learning process. But, the information given about weather is still pretty low. Care must be taken by schools to teach kids and families together about the profound effects of weather in our lives. Adults must also participate in this process to learn as much as kids in terms of weather.

Make learning fun-loving for your kids, by using Sheppard software.

Weather Maps

Learn more about weather with your kid and spend some extra time teaching them about how to understand and read different sorts of maps. The knowledge of maps will not only help a kid to be good at navigating, but it will also help them in learning about the topography of a place. It will also tell them which place has less vegetation and is more prone to the disastrous effects of a heat wave or floods.

Weather Projects

We all enjoyed science projects as kids. We all ran about for some relevant pieces of information and pictures to include in our projects. But in this new age, we have the internet to help us make a project and search for ample pictures. This could often make your kid lazy.  Children need to learn and understand about the effects of a changing climate and global warming. Make an effort to teach them about weather so that they do not take down notes from the internet blindly while making a project. Giving kids projects on weather and related topics is not enough. Projects must be done after a few seminars on the effects of weather, weather news and lifestyle or after a few outdoor sessions to the natural history museums.

As parents, it is our responsibility to engage in some fun projects at home with the kids. Sit with them for making a rain gauge or wind tool.

Weather Games

Monsoon is still here and rains have spoilt your kids’ outdoor plans. Sit with them and spend some quality time. Take one more step and play some weather games, which will not just teach your kids about weather but will also keep them entertained.

There are several websites to help you teach your child about weather forecast or weather in a city by reading maps and geographical characteristics of a region.
