The chilly winter weather in India is almost nearing its end, but not before giving you some health issues.  It is around this time that the weather is changing and is very erratic, spreading fear of people catching cold.  Here are some useful health tips to stay protected.

Say goodnight to technology – Most of us are glued to our laptops and phones, chatting with friends till late at night. Moreover, most of us also have our dinner only after 9:30 pm. Late night dinner not only leads to indigestion but also deprives us of good sleep.  We also tend to skip breakfast after having our dinner late. An unfit lifestyle therefore lowers and weakens our immunity. Try having your dinner early and keeping it light, for just a day. You’ll notice you’re more present with what’s happening and less stressed out the following day.

Get up early  -  Yes, most of you are still trying to overcome the laziness of the winter season, staying in the bed till late.. Experts suggest, it is high time you change your routine. Getting up early morning, (around 7 am for late risers) and doing some deep breathing for even about 15 minutes, will help you feel energetic all day. The feeling of heaviness that you get on a cold winter morning - that feeling that makes you feel sleepy and lethargic all day - will run away for good. Consuming 1 or 2 glasses of lukewarm water, first thing in the morning, will flush out all impurities from your body and will further help you in feel light all day. The moment you rigorously start to follow the first two basic points, cold, cough and flu will stay miles away from you.

Change your food - Eat and live in harmony with the season to not let any disease attack you, is a very important rule. The more ‘in balance’ you are, the greater will be your immunity. Include pungent foods and culinary herbs to your diet. Have a rich leafy salad for breakfast and a light green broccoli soup for dinner. This will stimulate circulation of the blood, keep the lungs clear and improve liver function, which becomes sluggish during the winter season. To make your body circulations better, include activities like biking, hiking and jogging in your daily routine. More than 50% of the health problems can be kept at bay by eating the right food at the right time.

Also, experts on Ayurveda suggest having raw turmeric, garlic and amla with warm water every day to avoid catching cold. These three herbs are known to be the best available antioxidants.

Lastly, listen to your granny or mommy when she tells you not to take off your sweaters even when it isn't so cold outside. Just when you feel winter is gone and there is no need to wear bulky layers of winter clothing, you make a mistake as you become prone to cold and flu.

Though these small tips and simple habits can be applied at any time of the year, they reap much more benefit as we transition through the seasonal changes!
