Raising a toast this winter

October 24, 2013 5:52 PM |

We're sure you hate being homebound due to a bad cold when you can go outdoors and enjoy what mother nature has to offer during winters. Residents of the capital city will get this years first taste of winter shortly and the scorching heat of summer will just be a memory. With cooler air settling in, a bout of cough and cold is likely to keep you under the wraps. But the good news is that the antioxidants present in your favourite glass of red wine will work in your favour.

The white wine blend, you know best, is possibly crisp and zingy like a summer salad. But whites don’t always have to leave a tingle on your tongue; they can also be velvety and full-bodied with a warmer colour, just the perfect aperitif for cold winter meals.

Wine to keep cold at bay

Several studies have proven that a glass of wine everyday will significantly reduce the chances of coming down with common cold in the winter chill. Antioxidants are known to fight infection and protect cells against free radicals, which might effectively play a role in combating cancer and other diseases.

 Wine might prevent Cancer

As people today abandon the old drinking rules of white quintessentially for ladies and red for men, all the pretty lasses can now rejoice. Another antioxidant boost is that they are believed to lower sex hormone levels to protect against breast cancer. Nevertheless, white wine can certainly be manly and protect you equally well on a cold winter’s night. Some researchers claim that the resveratrol obtained from drinking a glass of red wine thrice a week is enough to famish any nascent cancer cells. Time and again scientists have fed human cancer cells with resveratrol and concluded that the compound could subdue the fundamental action of a cancer-feeding protein.

 Reduce your waistline with wine

Resveratrol is definitely the healthiest compound in vino but shouldn’t hog all the limelight as piceatannol, the chemical compound that our body is known to convert from resveratrol, deserves credit as well. Piceatannol combines with the insulin receptors of fat cells, leaving no path for immature fat cells to mature and grow. Winter is all about indulging in hearty meals but let a glass of wine satiate you, rather than the beer pint.

Its time you expand your wine repertoire to raise the heat of your next elaborate dinner party. The best part is that you don’t have to queue up outside a booze shop to get a bottle of wine since a lot of supermarkets including Morning Stores in M block market of Greater Kailash- I or even all the Nature's Basket's stock wine. Don’t limit your consumption to the glass; wine will reap its benefits even in the form of sauce along with steak or any other dish. Now that you know it all, you can rightly claim “in vino veritas”!!!
