Paris is setting an example of rooftop farming done right with its whole host of rooftop plantations. One such rooftop plantation is coming up in Paris in the spring of 2020. When its inaugurated, this will be the largest rooftop farm in the world.

Currently, under construction in the south-west of Paris, this farm will span approximately 14,000 sq metres.30 different plant species can be grown in the plantation. The site will produce around 1000 kgs of fruit and vegetable every day in the high season. A total of 20 gardeners will be looking after the area. One good thing about this new fad is that only organic farming methods are to be used in the farm. Added to this, the farm will also have its own on-site restaurant and bar with capacity for around 300 people. The aerial eatery will offer panoramic views over the capital. The menu will feature seasonal produce grown on the site.

“The aim is for the farm to be a global model for sustainability.”, says the founder of Agripolis the company at the centre of the project.

Located on the top of a major exhibition complex the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, the farm is currently under construction.

Not only will it be the largest rooftop farm in the world but they the farm will also be a pioneering aeroponic ‘vertical’ farming. Plants grown by this method, use a closed water system and no soil. Therefore, minimized risk of pollutants and the requirement of any pesticides.

The farm will have also have an exceptionally low carbon footprint as the produce will be  grown locally.
