Now you could drink and ‘Eat’ water

No this isn’t an ‘April Fool’s Day' prank we are trying to play on you! Recently three British design students have come up with a portable, edible, and a funny looking thing called ‘Ooho’. It's meant to be an edible water bottle which will help you have water without the wasteful toxic plastic. The design was a winner at the second annual Lexus Design Award and will be on display during ‘Milan Design Week’.

The blob like water container is easy and cheap to make and is strong, hygienic, biodegradable, and edible. To drink and eat the ‘Ooho’, you gently bite its gelatinous membrane until the water runs into your mouth. Have it carefully or you spill water all over your clothes!

A compound made from algae and calcium chloride creates a gel around the water. The double membrane protects the inside hygienically, and makes it possible to put labels between the two layers without any adhesive.

Similar products have already made it to the market and whole food stores, however ‘Ooho’ is one much awaited water bottle.

Following the footsteps of water in an edible skin, people will soon see little nuggets of ice cream, yogurt, cheese, and even veggies inside an edible skin. Might sound like a weird fad, but it’ll save resources and keep junk outta landfills and oceans.

Some believe one immediate use for the ‘Ooho’ water blob could be for runners who often hydrate by grabbing paper cups or water bottles from spectators as they run. This therefore creates a lot of trash in the end. ‘Ooho’ offers a waste-free alternative as runners could carry it with them, hydrate and grab a bite too!

“This sounds like a very interesting invention. This product could be immensely helpful in the hot weather in India during the summers, when the maximums easily exceed 40⁰C and heatstrokes are common. Hope this product gets launched in India so there is less plastic waste produced considered that it is tested properly”, says Mahesh Palawat of Skymet’s Meteorological Division.
