Things to do in Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal has four different interpretations depending on the way you pronounce the city’s name. Located in the hills of the Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu, the most deserving interpretation of the name has to be ‘The Gift of the Forest’. The scenic beauty of Kodaikanal further magnifies during Monsoon and the entire experience is extremely refreshing.

Kodaikanal is your usual hill station minus the exhaustive sight-seeing and randomized set-ups. There’s a variety of food options to choose from ranging from South Indian to North Indian and from vegetarian to hardcore non-vegetarian. You also have the small bakery outlets serving fresh products straight out of the oven. The usual snack items can also be found in abundance and the best way to wash it all down with a steaming mug of coffee.

Now that you’re fed and watered, taking small treks comes next. The Kodai hills are home to the deafening silence of nature which caresses your mind. Coaker’s Walk and Brynt Park are the two most popular local points for hanging out. But the option of serious treks to Dolphine Nose, Kurunji Andavar Temple, Pambhar Falls, Pillar Rocks, etc. also remains. During Monsoon, rain can cause problems for tourists, but the magic of Kodaikanal comes to life during the rainy season only.

Kodaikanal also provides you the option of cycling and boating at the Kodai Lake. Moreover, taking a stroll and drifting away on off-track paths is another way of enjoying the beauty of Kodaikanal. One can even go shopping and bring back delicious homemade chocolates  and the famous eucalyptus oil. Besides, shopping is only a distraction from the real fun which is exploring Kodaikanal on foot.

Other places of interest in Kodaikanal include the Bear Shola Falls, Green Valley View, Guna caves, Berijam Lake, and more. If you’re planning a trip then plan one right at the end of Monsoon around August-September. Or else, you can gift yourself Kodaikanal during the onset of winter. In any case, you are sure to have a great time while visiting the land with many interpretations.
