Come winters and we start craving for more food. It seems and feels like the appetite increases at the time of winters. Well, the best way to warm up is from the inside-out.
Our body wants to take in lots of fuel to power through the long winter.
If one craves carbohydrates, then it could be a sign of seasonal depression. Try adding seasonal superfoods like sweet potatoes and cranberries in order to maintain the body balance.
It is not necessary that winter foods have to be soft and sticky as one is more prone to cheesy items during winters. Many herbs, spices, and teas have warming properties that will help you maintain heat and general well-being throughout the winter.
Cinnamon
The flavour of Cinnamon spice is warming, and it also increases blood flow throughout the body. It is loaded with powerful antioxidants. People are at more risk of heart attacks during winters. During such time, Cinnamon comes as a saviour. This is because it helps in preventing heart disease, including cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure.
Ginger
A spicy root, ginger has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine to treat the common cold. Fresh ginger warms the exterior of the body and dried ginger is said to warm the inside.
Pomegranates
Pomegranates are the equivalent of a fist full of supplements and vitamins packed into a single, natural fruit. It is high in potent antioxidants, fibre, vitamin C and potassium.
Cauliflower
Cauliflower is high in both Vitamin C and Vitamin K and has ample folic acid, vitamin B6 and fibre.
Brussel Sprouts
It is a member of the cabbage family, this “cruciferous” vegetable is packed with phytonutrients called glucosinolates, which have been shown to fight cancer. The vegetable’s fibre content is also key to lowering cholesterol. The sprouts also contain vitamin A and C, potassium, folate and iron.
Kiwi
This fruit that originated in China and was made famous in New Zealand has one of the highest levels of naturally occurring Vitamin C you’ll find.
