This year, the Mela Organizing Committee has chosen Uttar Pradesh as its theme state. At least 20 countries and all the states of India will be participating in the annual exhibition.
Being the largest craft fair across the world, this vibrant crafts fair is a great place that celebrates Indian folk tradition and cultural heritage.
While some of us may have gone to this Indian mela or fair during our childhood, many of us have only heard about it in stories from grandparents and parents. The Surajkund Crafts Fair is one such event that assures the festivity, fun and frolic of an Indian mela.
Every year in February, artisans and craftsmen from all across the country come and set up stalls in Surajkund, Haryana.
The exhibition would display some of the country’s most unparalleled and exquisite talent from fine handloom to ayurvedic herbs and fragrances; accessories to furniture, spices and condiments to statues and paintings.
Certainly, this event is a glimpse to India’s rich culture and heritage. One can explore the country’s treasure trove of crafts like terracotta pottery, cane handicrafts, wooden sculptures and metal statues. Apart from this, there are colorful food stalls that offer traditional cuisines and tempting aromas from idli sambhar to pav bhaji, from syrupy golas to colorful candy floss, Gujarati theplas to Bengali maach.
Moreover, one can sit back and enjoy traditional Kathakali, Kalbelia and Garba dances or even shake a leg to the loud and energetic bhangra beats. Theatre shows and Indian traditional music from different parts of the country can also be enjoyed at the Surajkund Crafts Mela.
So, people who have not visited this cultural extravaganza till now, must save the date!
