Achtung Fog!!!

September 25, 2013 5:34 PM |

Fog is sometimes mistaken as a cloud at the ground level. It is usually during the morning or evening and forms when the temperature drops to saturation point and water vapour in the air condenses to form suspended water droplets.

Use low beams. While driving in a foggy weather, be aware of local areas that tend to accumulate fog, as it can impair visibility and prove to be hazardous. In case you can't postpone your trip until the fog lifts, avoid driving with high beams as it will be reflected back off the fog making situation even worse.

No Speeding. Keep a watch on your speedometer; speeding up is a complete ‘no’ as fog tends to create a visual illusion of slow motion.

Rely on Wipers. Do not ignore wipers and defrosters as they will prove to be your best buddy in such situations and continuously wipe away moisture collected on the windshield.

Use fog lights.  Many vehicles nowadays, come with fog or driving lights mounted in or below the front bumper. Fog lights have clear or yellow lenses, while driving lights have clear lenses.

Go for BSIS. Various car manufacturers including Honda, Volvo and Ford now feature advanced blind spot information system, or BSIS. This technology uses radar sensors to detect the presence of vehicles in the driver's blind spot and automatically alerts the driver by activating a warning indicator.

With winter round the corner, gear up to battle fog by using your common sense and the above mentioned tips. Don’t forget that fog is one of those distant relative, we tend to forget about until a family reunion.
