We’re all waiting for the summer season to roll out in full swing. Good riddance from the shivering wintry spells; good riddance from heavy fabrics and layers of clothing; good riddance from the chilly mornings which leave you trapped in your bed; and good riddance from stuffy noses and sun devoid days. But did you leave a margin of thought for our worst outdoor enemy? You rush to the medics; to the grocery store; and you put your faith in homemade repellents, just to get rid of this enemy. It’s probably hit you by now that we’re talking about mosquitoes.
Besides the involuntary blood transfer that takes place between humans and mosquitoes, these little rangy bloodsucking entities also affect our day to day lifestyle. Your summer may not be so bright and sunny after all as these flying murderers are everywhere. Moreover, you even have movies based on mosquitoes. Let’s take a look at ways in which the deadliest animal in the world also plants restrictions and limitations on your lifestyle habits.
No Shorts or Sleeveless Clothing
We all love shorts and sleeveless clothing during summers. They’re comfortable, easy to wear and wash, and they make you feel free and cool. But be it your evening walk in that park near your house; or a casual stroll in the woods as a tourist; or the idea of sitting in your balcony for a reading session; mosquitoes spoil the party for most of us. Shorts and sleeveless clothes expose your legs and arms thereby allowing the mosquitoes to have a gala feast.
Can’t Eat Everything
Your food options are generally limited if you prefer those roadside meals and fast food stalls. The reason being that these areas are generally unhygienic and are breeding havens for mosquitoes. Maintenance and cleaning at such places usually takes place only as a mistake, a rare mistake.
Travel Plans Need Revision
You can literally count people who’ve cancelled trips to areas affected by mosquito borne diseases. In India itself, mosquitoes have wreaked havoc for tourists and travelers, both domestic as well as international. Be it the deadly dengue outbreak of 2013 or the Chikungunya outbreak in 2006, plans got rescheduled, or got bombed altogether. A sick traveler is not a traveler per se.
More Expenses
No matter how much you earn or how impressive your savings have been, nobody likes to spend an extra single buck than they anticipated. Mosquitoes force you to spend on things like mosquito nets, repellents, fogging machines, medicines, and others. Even governments have to dedicate a portion of their spending towards large-scale bio control along with medicine and treatment subsidization for problems caused by mosquitoes. Now that’s a lot of money for this buzzing nuisance! Id' rather burn my money.
Health Hassles
There are just so many mosquito-borne diseases which affect humans across the world. These slender legged beings give you malaria, dengue, chikungunya, filariasis, Zika fever, encephalitis, and other difficult to pronounce (and bear) diseases which claim almost a million lives every year. A single poke from the flying master of mayhem can change the way you look at life. And that is saying something!
Fear Factor
Does the presence of a mosquito affect your peace, calm, and concentration? Have you grown weary of places which may be home to mosquitoes? If yes, then the fear of mosquitoes has settled in deep within your senses. Don’t worry though, Entomophobia is more than common than you would think. A mosquito bite, or the buzzing sound of a mosquito close to your ears, it all irritates and worries you at the same time. Such a fear may not qualify you as a lunatic but it does chase you out of rooms in your day to day life. Any flying thing is scary now!
