As a Delhiite, you’re always dealing with weather extremities. The unforgiving heat during summer; the bone-chilling cold in the winter; and the patchy but intruding rain during Monsoon, every season takes its toll. We’ve entered that phase of the year when soaring mercury levels are gifting Delhi its highest day temperature of the season. In short, the heat is being felt.

But Monsoon isn’t too far away and Delhi’s populace is weary of traffic jams and much more. We often look towards the Delhi Metro to shield us from the Monsoon rains. But Monsoon affects each and every part of Delhi, and the Delhi Metro is no exception. We take a look at 6 things which you can expect while boarding the Delhi Metro during Southwest Monsoon.

Dirt in Abundance

All the dust that adds to Delhi’s air pollution crisis during summer, transforms to dirt during monsoon. You have the thick chunky dirt, the watery dirt, and of course the brittle sticky dirt. All forms of dirt enter Delhi Metro wagons during Monsoon. The floor, which usually goes unnoticed, is dotted with dirt during Monsoon.

Drenched Travelers

They’ll soak in every bit of rain outside and bring it inside. Unfortunately, there’s no law which prevents drenched commuters from boarding the Delhi Metro. So your co-travelers will be dripping and shedding water, with solidified components of mud and dirt, while you try your best to maintain a safe distance from them during rush hours. A battle you often lose!

Sneezing and Coughing

Monsoon is the season of allergies. It’s as if allergies roar out in celebration when the clouds begin to weep. And despite all health advisories, a large portion of Delhi’s population catches the flu or the eye infection. They join you at the busiest metro station, they sneeze and cough, some try to control it while others just let it go. It’s annoying, disturbing, and above anything else, highly unhygienic.

Boring Monsoon Chats

There’s something maddening about small talk. For those of us who hate to get involved in small talk, Delhi Metro during Monsoon is the worst place to be at. You’re counting stations before you can get down and they’ll keep going on about how bad the rain is, how important Monsoon is, or how the streets are flooded, and of course what of the poor! All that made up Monsoon chatter is sickening to say the least. Especially when you’re trying to find ground to stand on!

The Musty Lot

Soaked up clothes, humid air, and limited use of deodorants force you to survive in a musty crowded wagon during Monsoon. The air is so heavy and damp, you can almost feel your airless lungs screaming to escape from the stuffy insides of a Delhi Metro train. Out of all the things people with asthma can relate to, breathlessness tops the list.

The View Outside

It’s a challenging journey, yes. But there’s one thing which never disappoints you. And that one thing is the view from Delhi Metro. If you’re riding underground then there isn’t much respite for you. But if you ride through the many Delhi Metro bridges, the view is to die for. You cross iconic sites and beautiful views which summarize delightful Delhi. Monsoon sure does paint the city with balanced levels of brightness and contrast. It seems as if someone just turned up the saturation limit!
