Ever since the beginning of the month, Chennai has been recording light rains almost every day. However, last 48 hours have seen slight increase in the intensity.
On Thursday, city recorded 7 mm of rain, while on Wednesday it saw 12 mm of rains. Now, the good news is that these showers are likely to continue for another 24 to 48 hours over the city. Afterwards also, isolated pockets of the city would continue with short spells of light rain or passing showers.
But since these showers would during the late evening, they will not have any impact on the rising day maximums. Despite on and off rains, maximum temperatures have been settling in higher 30s. Thursday saw day temperatures settling at 38°C, while on Wednesday settled with 37°C.
According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation has been persisting over Southeast Arabian Sea and a feeble trough is also seen running along the coast of Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu.
The circulation is expected to enhance the speed of easterly winds over Tamil Nadu coast. Thus, weather will remain conducive for some patchy rains there over northern parts of the state including Chennai.
Although we do not expect heavy to very heavy rains but the cloud cover and on and off light rain will keep the weather slightly comfortable during the evening hours.
Chennai has already managed to record 50 mm of rain in the first 10 days of August. And with more rains in offing, we are hopeful that the state capital would be able to surpass its monthly average rainfall of 126.8 mm with ease.
