Sugary drinks are responsible for one in every 200 deaths caused due to obesity, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, reports Indiaspend.
More than 80 percent of these deaths occur as sugary sodas are directly linked to diabetes and weight gain.
If scientific evidence is to be believed, even one or two sugary drinks a day, which are considered under the safe zone, are enough to cause damage to your body.
People who consume one to two sugary drinks in one day are 26 percent more prone to develop type 2 diabetes than the ones who consume one serving a month.
Women who drank two or more sugary drinks in one day were at a 35 percent higher risk of developing coronary heart disease. Also, men who drank a can of fizzy drink per day were 20 percent more likely to either develop a heart attack or die from one.
Mexico applied a higher tax lesser consumption formula. Higher the taxes on these drinks, lower the demand gets. If India followed the same formula and a much higher tax was levied on these drinks, the consumption would reduce as Indian customers are price conscious and have comparatively lower incomes.
However, the tax increase alone would not be a significant contributor to the decrease in demand. Awareness campaigns in schools as well as sports complexes will also be of great help. As the weather is one of the most important contributors to the sale of these drinks, awareness during the summer season will be of significance.
Not only are sugary sodas harmful to one’s health but packed fruit juices also contain enough sugar to cause trouble. Even dairy-based beverages contain a high amount of sugar, which is, in turn, way harmful for one’s body. While Pepsi, Fanta, and Mountain Dew may sound like the best thirst quencher, drinking them is only bringing you a step closer to death.
