Insomnia is terrible, annoying and a painful experience. After spending an entire day working hard, all one wants to do is spend a peaceful night full of sleep. However, not all our dreams come true. When one cannot sleep, those hunger pangs automatically come to life.

But, not everything one eats before going to bed is healthy. Some of these food items may hinder with your sleep routine and keep you awake for longer durations. While coffee can give you a few more hours of sleeplessness, cherries can improve sleep length in humans.  Read on to know what are those must eat and must avoid food items before sleeping.

A warm glass of milk is one of the best food items you can consume before going to sleep. Milk contains tryptophan and serotonin, which induce sleep. On the other hand, ending the night with a glass of wine may not be a great idea after all. Not only does it reduces sleep time, but the quality of sleep is also adversely affected.

A bowl of cereal with hot milk may be your best bet for a peaceful sleep. Oatmeal is another food item you can eat before going to bed. Carbs are good for inducing sleep. However, a grilled cheese sandwich may not be the right thing to eat after all. Dark chocolate should be another item on the no list.

The good old banana is another food you can happily eat before sleeping. Not only does it keep you full enough but it also contains natural muscle relaxants. However, coffee or black tea would be another item to be avoided before sleeping. You don’t want to spend the entire night trying to sleep.

Potatoes, sweet potatoes, and papayas are a few food items that should be consumed before sleeping. These food items promote complex carbohydrates, promoting sleep. But, you must say a complete no to curry based food items as spices can keep you awake for a long time.
