By Wednesday night, Nicole became Category 4 storm hovering south of Bermuda. Bermuda witnessed hurricanes each year; but such a major hurricane hardly ever passes through the islands. According to the US National Hurricane Center, since 1851 only 7 major hurricanes have passed over Bermuda.
Nicole is the second storm after Hurricane Matthew that brewed in Atlantic this month that reached Category 4 hurricane. This is the first time such strong storms happened in October.
The population of Bermuda is north of 65,000.
Gusty winds of 196 km/h were observed at Commissioner's Point in Bermuda on Thursday morning.
The Atlantic hurricane season does not end until November 30.
