Winter Storm Niko battered most parts of Northeast United States on Thursday, giving record snowfall over several areas. In fact, six states were under a foot of Snow.

More than 3000 flights were cancelled, while life came to standstill over some parts of the region.

Snowfall rates were quite extreme at times, ranging from 1 to 4 inches per hour.

New York saw 4 inches of snow in an hour, while several places such as New York's Long Island, Massachusetts and Boston recorded thunder snow as well.

As expected, blustery winds with the speed of 80 kmph to 115 kmph lashed the region and at least 12 locations in southern New England recorded blizzard conditions.

Allentown in Pennsylvania received 7.1 inches of snow on Thursday, breaking its previous record of 5 inches.

Niko is now heading to Eastern Canada and is expected to start pounding snow over the region by early Friday.
