Wimbledon 2016: London rains cause play on middle Sunday

While London is notoriously known for its gloomy weather, rains have been wreaking havoc on Wimbledon 2016. So much so that several matches have been delayed throughout the first week of the play.

It seems like that wasn’t enough for rains gods and they wanted more. After a good spell of rain on July 1, it was decided by the officials that the match would have to be scheduled on Sunday. The worst part is that it’s the traditional middle Sunday, an off day.

However, as rains played spoilsport, middle Sunday had to be used for rescheduling matches for the first time in 12 years since the year 2004. In the history of 139 years of the tournament, this has happened just about three times namely in 1991, 1997, and 2004.

On the other hand, Centre Court where a retractable roof was installed in the year 2009, continued with play on Friday afternoon.

While many matches were delayed due to the rains, it was the world No.1 Novak Djokovic who also bore the brunt. The postponed match between Djokovic and Sam Querrey will now be played on rest day as well.
