California has been witnessing the fifth year of drought in 2016 and the news of stormy weather over the weekend could not have come at a better time. The drought break or the miracle that California people have been eagerly waiting for is likely to come over this weekend. For the next one week, parts of California are likely spectators to an impressive stretch of rain, snow and intense moisture infused by El Nino fueled Pacific Ocean.
After a disappointing January and unusually warm February, March is expected to bring relief in drought-stricken California in coming days. Touted as the ‘March Miracle’, the weekend full of stormy weather including bouts of rain and snow as much as 3 feet is likely in several parts of California. Heavy rainfall coupled with damaging winds and snowfall is expected to remain consistent till Monday morning.
California has been battling the worst drought in record history. The rain that begun on Friday may not be the best quick fix for the record-breaking drought. However, climate experts believe that the cold spell will certainly be beneficial in the easing the severe drought conditions across California.
Nonetheless, the wintry weather conditions are expected to disrupt the weekend travel or recreation plans. Several inches of rain could soak areas from San Diego and Los Angeles to San Francisco and Sacramento through next week.
As of Thursday's U.S. Drought Monitor, about 95% of California remains in a drought, the highest percentage of any U.S. state. March may be the only time for significant rain and snow in California as April typically kicks in the dry season over the state.
