Widespread rain to affect mid-Atlantic and Northeast US this weekend

January 9, 2016 1:40 PM |

usa rainA couple of fast moving storm systems will affect northeastern US, which will affect weekend travel. The first of the systems will be a weak one and might bring in chilly air over the region at first. Moderate fog could prevail for a short period throughout the mid-Atlantic, New England and the Upper Midwest into Saturday. In addition to the fog, frosty conditions are likely in parts of the northern Appalachians on Saturday morning.

Another weather system will produce heavier precipitation, but will bring in warm air across the region. The major impact of this system will be felt across Virginia to Pennsylvania on Saturday night before moving into New England on Sunday. Despite it being a fast moving storm, the downpour brought with it will be enough to cause travel disruptions on the road.

The duration of the rain will not be long but it will be heavy enough to cause minor flooding. The cities in the firing line of the storm system include Richmond, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. Heavy rain will move into New York City, Hartford, Connecticut, Boston and Portland, Maine, on Sunday. Many of the above cities could get upto 25 mm of rain in a span on six hours. Ahead of this storm system, temperatures are expected to rise significantly.

As the storm leaves the northeastern region on Monday, drier and cold air is expected to sweep the region.
