Cold air is expected to bring in lowest temperatures to the Northeast US resulting in first snowflakes of the season in some areas and damaging wind gusts during the weekend.

In the first ten days of October, cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. have recorded temperatures 8-16°F above average.

Since then, temperatures have settled 6-12°F below average over much of the Midwest. Similar pattern will follow in the Northeast starting the middle of this week.

Some locations over the higher terrain of the Appalachians and Great Lakes have already seen their first snowflakes of the season last weekend. Now, several places over the Upper Midwest and Interior Northeast are also expected to have some snowfall activity along with rainy spells.

Some of the higher elevations of the Alleghenies, Catskills, Adirondacks and Green and White mountains may get to see light snowfall as well.

Due to slippery roads, motorists should exercise caution. Flight delays are possible as blustery conditions may lead to turbulence for airline passengers.

Gales gusting at 72 kmph are expected from Michigan to New York state and New England. These winds would be strong enough to push down trees bringing down the power lines in their path as well.

Winds are expected to slow down from west to east across the Midwest and Northeast from late Wednesday night to Thursday night. Frost will extend much farther south and east on Thursday night.

However, this won't be the last of the cold blasts as a new and potentially more potent blast of cold air will follow this weekend.
