United States Winter Forecast : Cooler or Warmer than Average?

October 21, 2016 12:44 PM | Skymet Weather Team

This year, dry and mild winter is expected over most parts of the southern U.S., that could be credited to a developing La Niña, however the northern tier of the country could get hit by a colder and wetter winter.

As per weather experts, whether the citizens will encounter a dry, mild winter or a wet, cold one will depend on the seesaw dance of warmer and cooler seawater in the tropical Pacific Ocean that produces the climate effects known as El Niño and La Niña this Thursday.

Freezing temperatures are likely over a great part of the eastern U.S., moreover warmer than normal temperatures are possible in the West.

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, La Niña is likely to impact winter weather over the U.S. this year.

The forecast predicts that above or below normal temperatures and rainfall is most expected, however, the severity of cold spells is not known.

The La Niña climate pattern is often marked by cooler-than-average ocean water in the central Pacific Ocean and is one of the major influencing factors in the U.S. and around the globe, particularly during the late fall, winter and early spring.

Just last week an official "La Niña watch" was issued by the prediction center, which means the pattern is likely to form within the next few months.

This climate forecast provides the most accurate description of the upcoming winter season and also provides the citizens with an update that winter is arriving.
