Typhoon Meranti to bombard Taiwan with heavy rain, gusty winds

Meranti, a super typhoon is expected to drop heavy rains with gusty winds over Taiwan on Wednesday. The weather system equal to the hurricane of Category 4 reached super typhoon status on Monday.

Weatherman said that the super typhoon Meranti will be traveling through an environment with low wind shear and very warm ocean water which will favor further intensification. These winds have the capacity to cause severe damage along with the heavy rain and mudslides, Taiwan will have to be prepared for a troubled Wednesday. From early in Wednesday morning and into Thursday, Meranti will touch the southern parts of the country.

The weatherman continued, "Impacts to Taiwan could begin on Tuesday night, local time, but Wednesday seems to be the most likely time for the greatest impacts from Meranti.”

The gusty winds have the capacity of to go from 160kmph to 190kmph along the shore on Wednesday, resulting in uprooted trees and power shortages. Rainfall of 250 to 500 mm is a possibility with locally higher amounts of up to 750 mm (30 inches) in the mountains.

Taipei, however, will be far in north and may not be impacted by the typhoon.

A super typhoon is classified when sustained wind speeds hit at least 240kmph.
