Tropical storm Kujira gives flooding rain to southeast China

Tropical storm Kujira has started to affect southeastern China with flooding rain and gusty winds, the threat remains and will continue into Wednesday.

Kujira which is now classified into a tropical depression, formed in the South China Sea on Saturday morning. The storm system moved towards north and made landfall on Hainan Island Monday night. After making a landfall on Hainan Island, Kujira moved over to the Gulf of Hong Kong and is likely to make a second landfall over the Leizhou Peninsula late on Tuesday.

The major threat relating to Kujira is life threatening rainfall caused by flood like situation. The places where the storm will impact are Hainan Island, Guangxi and Guangdong provinces including the cities of Haikou, Nanning, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. These areas are home to around 30 million people and these people are in the firing line of the storm.

Rainfall amounting to 75 mm to 150 mm can be expected during the first half of the week and isolated areas could get as much as 250 mm of rainfall, especially around the center of the storm. Wind gusts around the center of the storm could reach up to 80 kmph during landfall.

Kujira will weaken due to contact with land but will still pose a risk of flooding and rain during the second half of the week across the region.
