Tropical storm Etau to strike Japan while typhoon Kilo to bypass

A newly formed tropical storm Etau will bring flooding rain to Japan this week while a powerful typhoon Kilo will bypass the country.

Kilo which was a hurricane formed in the eastern and central Pacific. It is likely to continue heading west-northwestwards towards Japan during this week. Kilo is expected to remain a powerful typhoon because of interaction with warm waters. During this weekend, Kilo is expected to curve to the east of Japan due to which its impact will be minimal.

Meanwhile tropical storm Etau has formed south of Japan and will become more organized this week. Etau will move northwards and come close to Japan mid-week.

As the moisture closes in on Japan heavy spells of rain will be observed in different parts of the country on Thursday. Light rain will linger on for the rest of the week. Central and southern Honshu is expected to receive the heaviest rainfall with the threat of flooding being the greatest in the region.

The cities which are located in this region are Tokyo, Nagoya, Hamamatsu and Shizuoka. The total rainfall amounts could be close to 100-150 mm. In addition to this a cold front has already dumped 50-100 mm of rain in the region. The combined phenomena will increase the threat of floods. Some of the areas along the southeast coast of Japan could get 150-300 mm of rain. Etau is expected to make landfall on Wednesday. Wind damage threat will be lower than flood threat. Wind gusts of over 85 kmph is possible in isolated areas.
