At least one person died and another went missing in Fiji after the flooding caused by tropical cyclone Zena on Wednesday. The cyclone was equivalent to a category 2 hurricane at peak strength but has weakened since.
Zena impacted the same region which was inundated by tropical cyclone Winston late February, which was the strongest ever tropical cyclone to hit the island nation. Across the entire nation a curfew was imposed by the government. All schools will be closed on Thursday.
A death and a missing person was reported in the western parts of the island chain. Thousands of people were evacuated due to the cyclone.
Prior to this cyclone a tropical disturbance dumped around 300 mm of rain to Nadi on Sunday and Monday which caused flooding across the region. The additional 150 mm of rain from tropical cyclone Zena from Tuesday night into Wednesday has made matters worse.
According to satellite imagery Zena strengthened significantly on Tuesday before weakening as it passed just south of Fiji’s main island.
On Thursday morning heavy rain will affect Fiji and as the day progresses things will improve as Zena moves away in an east-southeasterly direction. Zena is likely to dissipate near Tonga on Thursday night or Friday.
