Heavy rain and thunderstorms will target the central United States later this week, triggering flood-like situation and travel delays.
To begin with, these storms will first hit areas of South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas through Wednesday night as a cold front will sweep into the region. The storms are then expected to head farther east and south around Thursday and Friday.
Cities that will be most affected by the heavy rains this week include North Platte and Omaha in Nebraska, Sioux Falls in South Dakota, Des Moines in Iowa, Kansas City and Springfield in Missouri and Oklahoma City.
Frequent downpours are expected to move over the same area and will result in very extreme rainfall over a relatively short amount of time.
Numerous inches of rain can accumulate in only a few hours in these conditions. This kind of threat can produce quickly changing conditions, mostly to road travelers.
Moreover to the excessive rainfall, some thunderstorms will also turn into severe this week. Severe storms are expected to be isolated in nature, but a few can be capable of generating damaging winds and hail.
The main reason for this flood threat can be attributed to the gulf moisture which is streaming northward into the Plains along the cold front.
Drier and sunnier weather will follow this weekend across the Plains and Midwest to help with any necessary cleanup.
