Heavy showers and powerful gusts wiped out the weekend across Ireland. In fact, more torrential rains and thunderstorms are expected over most of the areas.

As per weather experts, the unpleasant weather will not relent until tomorrow, before it starts to settle.

Mid-week onwards, drier conditions are likely to prevail over the region, bringing more unsettled conditions.

As of today, torrential downpours may occur in western and northern areas, due to westerly winds that are approaching the region. Temperatures will remain comparatively high between 12-14 degrees Celsius.

A yellow-status weather alert was issued for most of the weekend for heavy rainfall. The warning was for Wexford, Wicklow, Cork and Waterford, alarming high inundated situations.

Another yellow alert was in place yesterday for small sailing crafts due to the southerly winds out at sea.

Fog is expected on Wednesday night but will clear on Thursday morning.

The wet weather has arrived as the country braces itself for seasonal floods.

Each year, flooding usually hits Ireland between October and January, with some areas more affected than others. Places that are worst hit by flooding include Cork, regions in the West, such as Galway and Mayo and parts of Dublin.
