Parts of southern US braces for spells of severe thunderstorms and flooding downpours this week. Texas will be the focal point of the severe weather on Tuesday night. The storms will affect the areas from Del Rio, San Angelo and Abilene southward toward Laredo.
The main threats from these storms on Tuesday night will be in the form of damaging winds, large hail and flash flooding. Some of the strongest thunderstorms could produce short lived tornadoes. The other area which will be hit hard by severe weather on Tuesday night is central Florida. Cities such as Tampa, Orlando and Melbourne, Florida may experience some flash flooding and gusty winds from these thunderstorms.
The total rain accumulation from Texas and Oklahoma to southwestern Tennessee and into Florida through Friday will be upto 100 mm. The heaviest rainfall is likely from central and coastal Texas to right along the central Gulf Coast, where rain accumulations of upto 150 mm is expected.
From this past Sunday morning to Monday morning, parts of Nueces County, Texas received around 250 mm of rainfall. Parts of Texas, including Angleton, Ingleside, Rockport, Corpus Christi and Houston were struck by flash flooding on Sunday night into Monday morning. This inundated roads, flood waters entered homes and forced evacuations across the region.
Spells of severe weather will continue to affect the region during the remaining part of the week, as will the risk of flooding.
