Sydney braces itself for hottest night in 150 years

Sydney is all set to swelter in its hottest night in the history of 150 years. The city is expected to brace itself for a pre-Christmas heatwave with the temperatures expected to soar up to 36°C in the city.

As per the Bureau of Meteorology, temperatures tonight are expected to settle at 26°C overnight which is supposedly the hottest overnight minimums in last 150 years. Last the city observed a hottest December was in the year 1868 when the mercury soared to 26.3°C.

Like Sydney, cities like Perth, Brisbane and Darwin are expected to remain warm. On the contrary, weather in Hobart, Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra would be comparatively cooler on Wednesday.

Sydney sweltered at 37.7°C on Monday and the maximum settled at 37.8°C on Tuesday. The last time, the city witnessed two consecutive warm days were in the year 2002.

The hot weather also led to fire bans being declared across 10 districts of South Australia, seven in NSW and three in Victoria.

Moreover, the firefighters did a great job in controlling a bushfire that went on to blaze 3300 hectares of land between the Nullarbor Roadhouse in SA and the Western Australian border.

In fact, in parts of Tasmania as well, fire crews were also on standby on Tuesday with very mild temperatures. As per the weatherman, Melbourne and Adelaide will witness a cooler Wednesday after witnessing scorching heat on Monday and Tuesday.

Canberra will also witness a drop in temperatures from 33°C to 29°C and will be slightly cooler on Tuesday. However, the weather will be rainy on Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to remain in the upper 30s on the following Thursday until the weekend for Perth. Until next week, Darwin is likely to witness a good 30°C.
