Air traffic control at the Sydney airport were in working throughout yesterday rerouting flights as a fast-moving thunderstorms brushed across Sydney on Wednesday afternoon.
Flurry of storms came to existence as a southerly winds merged into north-west winds which are humid in nature. These rains were layered with gusty winds and quick drop in mercury. But by the end of the day, the storm cleared away.
The greatest problem was faced by people travelling from Sydney Airport. The ground staff at the airport was asked to clear the areas as the thunderstorms moved in.
One passenger on a Jetstar flight said his plane "Sat on the tarmac for an hour then headed back to refuel but now can't refuel as staff are sheltering", he said as his delay lengthened to four hours. "Obviously, there will be a major backlog."
Flights were delayed by an hour and travellers were advised to contact their airline for updated departure times. Both domestic and international flights are facing delays, with the backlog now affecting as many as 20 planes.
A Qantas spokesman said, "We're expecting delays to occur throughout the evening and we thank our customers for the patience. When staff is able to go back onto the tarmac, they will do their best to get customers away safely and as soon as possible."
