The second official storm of winter in Britain finally has a name. Storm Barbara is now likely to head Northeast and affect travel plans. Christmas power cuts are likely in many parts as the storm is expected to pack gusty winds up to 90 mph.
On Friday, the capital city of England, London is expected to witness heavy rains along with gusty winds. However, the weather will improve here around Saturday.
Warnings have been issued in several parts of Northern Ireland and England along with areas of Scotland. Not only is there potential for power disruption but also the possibility of some structural damage. The United Kingdom is likely to be affected Friday onward.
The western parts of Scotland are expected to have a stormy weekend with travel plans being hindered. People planning to take a ferry for Christmas travel have been advised to take note of the expected weather conditions.
While the warning colour amber has been used for Scotland until Christmas eve, England and Northern Ireland have been given a yellow, i.e. be aware warning for at least 24 hours starting Friday morning.
During the Christmas weekend, rain along with isolated snowfall is expected in areas of the northern hills. Very heavy rains, strong winds are expected looking at the storm’s track. Major transport delays are expected all along. Not only ferry, but both flight and train services are expected to be affected.
Coasts of Northern Ireland and Scotland are likely to witness waves as high as nine metres. The weather may improve in the coming days.
