In the past few days, an active weather system has given plenty of rainfall over northern Spain. Now, we can  expect a short break.

Incessant rainfall has been lashing parts of the Iberian Peninsula, especially near the border of Spain and Portugal. Since the beginning of this year, it has been raining almost every day. There have been many days where more than 30 mm of rainfall has been recorded.

Showers are expected to continue till Monday. On Tuesday, only a few spell of showers or drizzle will linger on. However, northcentral and northeastern Spain will remain mainly dry.

Most parts of northwestern Spain have received deficient rainfall in December. According to the European Drought Observatory, rainfall has been deficient for northwest Portugal and northwestern Spain in mid-December. Portions of northwestern Spain also reported soil moisture deficiency. Thus, this spell of rain will prove to be beneficial.

A fresh storm system will march towards Spain from the northwest, bringing back good showers by Wednesday afternoon for much of the region. The intensity of rain will once again become heavy over northwest Spain and Portugal on Wednesday night. Rainfall totals of up to 30 mm can be expected over northwestern Spain. This spell of rain could be the last in January.
