Floods continue to wreak havoc in Italy

Rain in FranceUpdate on November 17, 14:40 (IST): Heavy rain triggered floods and wreaked havoc across an already water-logged northern Italy. Genoa was the worst affected city, as it recorded 159 mm of rainfall in just 12 hours on Saturday. Meanwhile, Lugano and Milan received 93 mm and 102 mm of rainfall, respectively, on the same day.

Three members of a family were reported to be killed in the south of France when their car was swept away.

As per the forecast, another low pressure area is approaching, which will again cause heavy rain over northern Italy on Monday but Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be dry.

Update on November 7, 14:45 (IST) - After leaving the French Riviera, the spell of heavy rain and thunderstorm has now moved to the Alps. While France was lashed by floods yesterday, Northern Italy has been left to face the wrath of heavy rain.

The devastating thunderstorm has left 6500 homes without power in the area. Due to this, 16 regions stretching from Medi to Rhone Valley were put on 'Orange alert'. Also, transportation system like rail and road were also affected due to heavy rains and thunderstorms.

Thousands of people were forced out of homes in the Tuscan region of Carrara in Northern Italy, this was after River Carrione burst its banks and caused widespread flooding in the region.

Some stations of Switzerland also reported heavy rains. For instance, Guetsch recorded 118 mm of rain where as Locarno received 249 mm of rain in two days.

Further heavy rain is expected across French and Italian Riviera early next week. The residents are advised to take necessary steps and precautions for the upcoming threat of heavy rain especially in those areas where already flooding has taken place.

 

Incessant widespread rainfall coupled with strong winds has created flood like situation across South France. 15 districts were on high alert, as gushing water flooded the streets. This is the third time in six weeks, when region has witnessed such heavy downpour.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, there will be no respite as the region will continue  to witness heavy showers.

Ardèche region was hit the hardest as the local river burst its banks and entered into the streets. Local authorities have issued an orange alert, which is the second highest weather alert, warning residents to be vigilant of inclement weather conditions.

Nice, which is the fifth most populous city of France, saw it's second highest rainfall total since records began.

Over 6000 thousand people have been left without power. Small streets have turned into drains and roads have been damaged. Local rivers are flowing above the danger levels. Relief work is underway but it is being hampered due to poor weather conditions.

Moreover, the wet weather had a deep impact on the Vineyards, as the grape harvest reduced by 20% - 30%. As per the cultivators, due to excess rainfall grapes have been smelling of vinegar and had to be thrown away.
