South America Summer forecast: Rains for North Brazil, Heat for Argentina, Chile

October 23, 2016 3:07 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The changing of the seasons will give good rainfall to parts of Northern Brazil. In the interim, summer heat will excessively roast parts of Chile and Argentina as temperatures climb to the 40 °C (100 °F).

Last year, strong El Niño produced drier-than-normal conditions across northern Brazil, leading to severe drought conditions. Since the strong El Niño has ended, conditions will favor in more rain and some drought relief in northern and central Brazil.

Rain is also anticipated over parts of drought laden Venezuela and Colombia.

There will probably be better rains in northeastern Brazil this summer as compared to last summer, but it doesn't seem adequate to improve the long-term drought conditions.

Typical summer heat is expected to build over parts of South America this season, focusing on parts of Argentina. There will be areas with highs in the lower 30 °C to 40 °C (90s to low 100s °F) in central Argentina.

Stifling summer heat will often be interrupted by the passage of cold fronts, bringing a temporary drop in temperature and few episodes of rain and thunderstorms. Some of these thunderstorms may turn violent  with damaging winds and downpours that could prompt localized flooding.

Showers and thunderstorms are also expected this summer across Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay, with many areas in these countries getting near-normal rainfall. Akin to last summer, the upcoming season is expected to bring mostly hot and dry weather to Chile.

Areas in central Chile will have several stretches when highs will exceed the upper 30 °C (80 °F), including the capital city of Santiago. Chile is emerging from a scanty rainfall that produced little rainfall, so more heat and dryness will worsen drought conditions.
