Snowstorm Linus
USA is experiencing extreme weather from Snow in the northeast to drought in California.
The city of New York is in for major snowfall in the wee hours of Monday. The snow could be as much as three to five inches and this is all due to Snowstorm Linus. The effect of this storm is to start on Sunday night and will increase in intensity overnight. This storm will make Monday morning commutation a nightmare as the roads would become slippery. Snowstorm warning has been issued for northern New Jersey, northern Nassau County, northwest Suffolk County and southeastern coastal Connecticut.Meanwhile, a snowstorm watch was issued for southern Nassau and eastern and southwest Suffolk. Flash Freeze is also possible in New York, Boston and New England. This storm system is enormous and its effect will be felt from Detroit to Buffalo. In Chicago 1700 flights have been canceled whereas, in Nebraska two deaths have been reported.
It is to be noted that the forecast of the previous snowstorm Juno was on the higher side and the National Weather Service did apologies for it as this had caused major shut down of New York City.
A frigid air mass will move over the region after this storm passes by. This will result in a dip in temperatures to well below freezing levels which would turn any wet surface to ice. There are strong chances the temperatures might fall up to 10 to 20 degrees below zero by Monday evening in New York.
California Drought
The state of California faced one of the driest January in history. This is the time of the year when it usually rains the most, this could mean that California is likely to face the fourth consecutive drought year. The record for the driest January was in the year 1984 in which less than 1 cm of rain was recorded. The low rainfall along with above average temperatures has resulted in meagre snow falls. This long drought in California has slowed down economy of the most populated state in the country.
