The polar vortex is likely to shift southward across Canada and settle down near Hudson Bay. This will help spread arctic air across the Central and Eastern United States during the second week of January. Weather forecasters are predicting the coldest air of the season in many places of the United States.
This return of arctic air is setting the stage for few feet of snow in the snow belts of the Great Lakes. Moreover, a low pressure system will bring light snowfall over Ohio Valley and parts of the Northeast. Travel could be hazardous is these regions.
Temperatures are likely to plummet 10 to 20°F below normal across the Plains, Midwest and Great Lakes during the next week.
Talking about polar vortex, it is an atmospheric feature that permanently exists near the poles. Sometimes in the winter season, it weakens and gets displaced. Thus, we have waves of arctic air farther south away from the poles.
El Nino triggered storms to bring rain and snow over northwestern US
The El Nino enhanced storms from the Pacific Ocean will bypass Southern California and head for Northwestern United States this week. The storms will bring bulk of the rain and mountain snow from Northern California to Washington and British Columbia.
This comes as good news for the flooded areas of Southwestern United States. The stream waters will be allowed to recede and saturated grounds will dry out.
