The snow-hit Britain is on storm alert with heavy rain and gusts predicted toward the end of the week.
The severe Arctic blast is expected to lose its grip over the next 48 hours, thus making way for a stormy weather system to move in from the Atlantic. With this, temperatures will begin to rise during the weekend.
Moreover, a turbulent weather system will sweep in on Friday. Under the influence of this, parts of the country will witness heavy rain and strong winds. Any further snowfall will be limited to the northern parts as temperatures start to rise.
An area of high pressure developing on Friday will bring mostly dry and sunny weather during afternoon hours. However, the next Atlantic system is expected to bring heavy rain accompanied by strong southerly winds that will reach western parts of mainland UK during late night.
Rain and strong winds will continue to move through most parts in the east during Friday night, leading to a windy and wet start to Saturday in many areas. Sunday is likely to be dry and bright across the south for now.
Britain has witnessed the first taste of winter this week after thermometers plunged and snow blanketed the country.
The chilly weather is expected to continue for the next few days as well, however temperatures will rise gradually by the weekend, making weather conditions a bit mild in the south, but staying cool in the north.
Rain will commence from the west, most persistent in northern and western areas and then advance slowly eastwards, but may stall across central, east and northern region.
The big freeze has prompted a blizzard of bets this winter being colder than ever before and hence the white Christmas bet is well underway.
