Snow blankets Spain and Southeast Europe

January 21, 2015 4:03 PM |

Kiruna_station_large CroppedSpain which is a high altitude, desert country has turned largely white, thanks to a snow blanket caused by a deep low pressure trough. Northern Spain has received the first snowfall of the season with Basque, Asturias, Tarragona getting majority of snowfall but, 35 other provinces were on lower orange warning while Basque and Asturias were on red alert.

The snowfall has led to school closure and traffic disruptions. However, this has come as a huge relief to school children, who will have time for some outdoor activities.. The people have been busy clearing streets and highways using snow ploughs but are not able to totally avoid traffic delays & disruptions. The worst affected is the high altitude town of Navacerrada.

A ski resort near Madrid recorded subzero temperatures before the weekend and has received 27 cm of snow on ground. Fresh snow has been reported by 13 Spanish Ski Resorts, including Alto Campoo, Candanchú,Javalambre, Leitariegos, Port Del Comte, San Isidro, Sierra Nevada and Valdezcaray. For next 24 hours more than10 cm of fresh snow is forecast for four Spanish Ski Resorts.

This is all because of a winter low pressure system which has moved across north Atlantic and caused severe weather across Scotland and England where minimum temperatures of -14°C and -3°C were recorded respectively. The same system has caused serious flooding rain in Balkan states of Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania, where some areas have been submerged for the fifth time in about one and half years.

The forecast for coming week in Spain is not very encouraging, as Jet Stream  moving southwards, will push some more cold air, causing further rain and snow in Spain.
