Smoggy Southeast US to get some rain this weekend

Hazy US

Hazy skies will continue across most areas of the southeastern United States through the end of the week.

According to weathermen, there is a brief opportunity of rain for these areas around weekend as a storm will approach the country this week.

Since the beginning of October, much of southeastern US remained almost dry which led to extreme drought conditions. In fact, no significant rainfall was witnessed since September. This led to several fires breaking out from Eastern Kentucky and Western Virginia to Northern Georgia.

At present, the Tellico and Rough Ridge fires are the largest fires across the area.

Though no rain is expected for the immediate future, winds are expected to remain calm through Friday; this will help firefighters to control contain blazes during the daytime.

The lack of wind flow has contributed to hazy, smoky skies across the area, lowering visibility at times close to the ground.

The high pressure will be a problem for fire suppression activities during the overnight as the steady air will trap smoke low to the surface.

A storm is likely to approach the East Coast this weekend. This will bring an opportunity for rain in some locations of the Southeast US. The west of the Appalachian Mountains is expected to receive fairly good rains. But this rain will not be sufficient to reverse drought conditions prevailing in the area. Meantime, the east of the Appalachian Mountains will remain dry.

Brief showers are also possible across Memphis, Nashville, Birmingham, Alabama, and Jackson in Mississippi.

The main concern for wildfires crews is the expansion in winds behind this storm, as wind movements can quickly change where the fire is heading.

Following the storm from this weekend, the next episode for some significant rainfall is not anticipated until around Thanksgiving.
