A thick fog blanket over Sydney in the early morning hours baffled the locals as it bought the ferries to a halt. Additionally, most of the flights at the Sydney Airport were either canceled or delayed.
Buses were used to replace the Manly ferry services instead of the ferries. However, the F3 Parramatta River ferry started again shortly, daily commuters were still prescribed to keep that extra time slot ready for traveling.
Due to the smoggy weather, three international flights from Dallas, Los Angeles and San Francisco were side-tracked to Brisbane that caused a delay of two hours. Six domestic flights to and from Sydney were also diverted.
Senior meteorologist at Weatherzone, Mr. Brett Dutschke, reiterated that this fog initiated in western region of Sydney early morning at around 9 am, as per Australian timings on Sunday. Thereafter, it slowly escalated towards east covering most parts of Sydney including the airport offering very low visibility.
He explained that the reason for this stubborn smoggy weather could be related to the light drizzles the day before along with light winds that stayed for a longer period of time. Which means there was a little evaporation of rainwater from the water pools that had condensed into dense fog.
Although, the fog started clearing in parts of Sydney from about 8 am, it still lingered parts of suburbs till 10 am.
